Description
A large raspberry- to wine-red Russula with yellowing gills, a stout white stem, and mild flesh.
Identification features
The cap is 7–20 cm wide, raspberry- to wine-red, sometimes olive-greenish centrally. Gills are initially cream and later yellow. The stem is white, thick, and robust.

How to separate similar species
Russula olivacea is similar but often has a pink-flushed stem. Cap colour in large Russula is highly variable.
Habitat
Grows in various woodland types, mainly on calcareous soils, in summer and early autumn.
