Description
A pale grey bolete with yellow pores and a rooting stem base; the flesh blues when cut and is strongly bitter.
Identification features
The cap is 5–10 cm wide, pale grey to slightly brownish and dry. Yellow pores blue strongly when pressed. The yellow stem is thickened and rooting at the base.

Check the pale cap, yellow pores, strong blueing and especially the long rooting stem base. Bitterness is characteristic, but tasting is unnecessary.

How to separate similar species
Butyriboletus fechtneri can look similar but differs in colour tones and is not so strongly bitter. Several yellow-pored boletes are difficult to separate.
