Description
A brown Tricholoma with a fleshy cap and whitish gills, characteristically mycorrhizal with poplars.
Identification features
The cap is brown to reddish-brown, fleshy, smooth to finely fibrous, and may be sticky when moist. Gills are white to cream. The stem is pale and firm.
Identification checklist
The most important supporting clue is direct association with poplars. Also check the brown fleshy cap, white gills, and firm stem.
How to separate similar species
Brown Tricholoma are very similar, and some are poisonous. Tree association helps but is not sufficient without other characters.
Habitat
Grows with poplars, often in parks, avenues, and riverside habitats, mainly in autumn.
