Description

A large pale ochre-grey grisette with a distinctly striate cap margin, no ring, and a robust sack-like volva at the base.

Identification features

The cap is 8–12 cm, sometimes much larger, pale to darker ochre-grey with a sharply striate margin. Gills are white to cream and free. The long stem lacks a ring but may carry veil remnants; the base sits in a leathery volva.

Identification checklist

Always expose the complete stem base. Check the absence of a ring, strongly striate margin, pale ochre-grey colour and large leathery volva.

How to separate similar species

Grisettes are very similar, and young specimens can resemble dangerous Amanita. A photograph alone is not enough for food decisions.

Habitat

Grows on dry woodland clearings, edges and in grass, mostly near broadleaved trees, from early summer to late autumn; rare.
