Description
A hard bracket fungus with a silvery hairy, concentrically zoned upper surface and whitish pores beneath.
Identification features
Fruitbodies are 3–8 cm, bracket-shaped, hard and corky. The upper surface is silvery hairy with white, grey, ochre and brown zones; pores are fine and pale.
Identification checklist
The most useful clues are the distinctly silvery hairy upper surface and fine white to cream pores.
How to separate similar species
Trametes versicolor usually has more strongly multicoloured zones and a less hairy surface.
Habitat
Grows in groups on dead hardwood, especially beech and birch, through much of the year.
