Description
A slender ochre-brown funnel mushroom with a small central boss in the depressed cap and white gills running far down the stem.
Identification features
The cap is smooth and quickly becomes strongly funnel-shaped, often retaining a central boss. Gills are thin, white and crowded. The stem is paler than the cap, slightly broadened toward the base and white-felted.
Identification checklist
Check the funnel-shaped leather- to ochre-brown cap with a persistent blunt boss, white strongly decurrent gills and white-felted stem base. The spore print is white.
How to separate similar species
Several funnel-shaped species look similar and some Clitocybe-like mushrooms are poisonous. Trooping funnel is larger and more robust; tawny funnel lacks the same central boss. Never infer edibility from funnel shape alone.
Habitat
On woodland soil, often near conifers, singly or in groups; summer and autumn.
