Description
A robust yellow-orange Phlegmacium with several conspicuous woolly yellow bands on the stem, almost always associated with birch.
Identification features
The cap is 8–15 cm wide, yellow to orange and greasy when wet. Gills start grey to bluish-white and become rusty brown. The stout stem bears several yellow woolly bands.

How to separate similar species
Species formerly placed broadly in Cortinarius are difficult. Colour alone is insufficient; stem bands, tree partner and rusty-brown spore print matter.
Habitat
Grows in deciduous woodland and parks mainly with birch, in summer and autumn.
