Description
A rusty to reddish-brown crust polypore spreading patch-like over dead wood.
Identification features
The fruitbody is only about 0.5–1.5 cm thick but may cover a large area. Cinnamon to reddish-brown, hard and corky, with small round pores.

How to separate similar species
Fomitiporia punctata can be similar; crust polypores often require microscopic confirmation.
Habitat
Grows on dead wood of various hardwoods, on trunks and branches, and remains visible through much of the year.
