Description
A perennial rusty-brown crust polypore spreading flat over branches and trunks, with the pore surface exposed on the visible outer face.
Identification features
The fruitbody is only about 1–2 cm thick but may spread over a large area. It is light to rusty brown with fine round pores on the outer surface.
Identification checklist
Check the flat crust-like growth without a true cap and the outward-facing rusty pore surface.
How to separate similar species
Fomitiporia robusta forms a large hoof-like bracket, whereas F. punctata is mainly flat and spreading.
Habitat
Grows year-round on living and dead branches and trunks of various hardwoods, including grapevine.
