Description
A large annual polypore with a smooth lacquered brown surface and broad pale margin, growing on hardwoods.
Identification features
Fruitbody 10–45 cm or larger, semicircular and laterally attached. Surface smooth, glossy and zoned brown; young margin broad whitish to cream.

How to separate similar species
Ganoderma lucidum is usually smaller and often stalked; Ganoderma species can be difficult macroscopically.
Habitat
Grows on living or dead hardwoods, often oak, beech and poplar, mainly in summer and autumn.
