Description
A grey-brown bonnet with a long stem marked by characteristic longitudinal grooves.
Identification features
Cap about 2–4 cm wide, conical to bell-shaped, grey to brown-grey and radially lined. Stem is long, greyish and distinctly longitudinally grooved.

Check grey bonnets on wood and especially the distinct longitudinal grooves on the long stem.
How to separate similar species
Other bonnets may have lined caps but not such a characteristically grooved stem. Mycena is difficult to identify safely for food.
Habitat
Grows on hardwood stumps and dead wood, often in groups, in summer and autumn.
