Description
A brownish gelatinous jelly fungus with a distinctly narrowed attachment, growing mainly on dead willow branches.
Identification features
Fruitbodies are usually 1–4 cm wide, ear- to lobe-shaped, amber to reddish-brown and gelatinous when wet. They narrow characteristically toward the substrate like a short stalk.
Identification checklist
Check the brown gelatinous fruitbody, ear-like form and especially the narrowed stalk-like attachment.
How to separate similar species
Black Exidia species are darker and usually lack such a distinct stalk-like attachment. Related species can be difficult.
Habitat
Grows on dead slender hardwood branches, especially willow, mainly during cool wet periods.
