Description
A pale Tricholoma with a very unpleasant, penetrating odour; the Slovenian source lists it as poisonous.
Identification features
The cap is pale whitish to grey-yellow or ochre, dry and smooth to slightly fibrous. Gills are pale and the stem whitish. The strongly unpleasant smell is an important feature.
Identification checklist
Check the pale dry cap, light gills and especially the strong unpleasant odour. Grey and pale Tricholoma are difficult to identify.
How to separate similar species
Tricholoma lascivum is also inedible and unpleasant-smelling. Because of similarity, do not make food decisions from a photograph.
Habitat
Grows in woodland, especially in cooler sites and with conifers, mainly in autumn.
