Description
A large yellow-orange rustgill growing in clusters on wood, with a distinct membranous ring on the stem.
Identification features
Cap about 5–15 cm, yellow to orange or rusty orange and fibrous. Gills are yellow at first, later rusty brown. Stem is robust, yellow-ochre and bears a membranous ring.

How to separate similar species
Pholiota aurivella can look similar but has different cap scales. Edibility should not be assessed from a photo in Gymnopilus.
Habitat
Grows on dead wood and at the base of living or dead hardwood trees, mainly in late summer and autumn.
