Description
A small pale greyish to cream cup fungus with a distinctly hairy brown outer surface.
Identification features
Fruitbody about 0.5–3 cm wide, initially almost hemispherical and later cup-shaped. The inner fertile surface is smooth, pale to greyish, while the outside is densely covered with brown hairs. A stem is usually absent.

How to separate similar species
Tarzetta cupularis is paler and smoother outside. Scutellinia usually has a distinctly red inner surface and longer marginal hairs. Microscopy is often useful for similar small cup fungi.
Habitat
Grows on damp soil, often among moss and on small woody debris in woodland, from summer to autumn.
