Description
A large annual brown polypore with a bright yellow margin when young; often grows near conifer roots and is inedible.
Identification features
Caps are 8–30 cm wide, strongly felted to hairy, yellow-brown to rusty brown, with a conspicuous bright-yellow margin when young. Pores are yellow-green, later brown and darkening.

How to separate similar species
Old fruitbodies darken strongly and lose the characteristic yellow margin, making them harder to identify.
Habitat
Grows on decayed stumps or roots, mainly spruce, pine and larch, less often other trees, from spring to autumn.
