Description
A distinctive earthstar with a fleshy collar around the inner spherical spore sac.
Identification features
Young fruitbodies are globose; later the outer layer splits into star-like rays. Part of it often forms a conspicuous collar around the central spherical spore sac.

How to separate similar species
Other earthstars differ in ray or peristome structure. Astraeus hygrometricus characteristically closes in dry conditions.
Habitat
Grows in deciduous and less often coniferous woodland on soil and litter, in summer and autumn.
