Description
A yellow-ochre cup fungus, blister-like when young and opening into a cup with age; common on compost and heavily manured ground.
Identification features
The fruitbody is 2–6 cm wide, initially inflated and blister-like, later cup-shaped and wavy. The inner fertile surface is yellow-ochre to brownish, the outside paler.
Identification checklist
Check the blister-to-cup shape, yellow-ochre tones and organically rich habitat. Peziza species are very similar and often require microscopy.
How to separate similar species
Several cup fungi are almost impossible to separate reliably by eye. A photograph alone is therefore not a basis for food decisions.
Habitat
Grows on manured soil, compost, in greenhouses and similar organically rich places from spring to late autumn.
